A couple of decades ago I was invited to Sao Paulo to give a keynote at a conference of psychiatrists. Freudians and Lacanians battled each other. I gave critical support to the Freudians. Come question time and I was asked to explain the psychology of Israel. I quoted from an Auden poem to the effect that those to whom evil is done, do evil in return. The French delegates were livid. Denounced me. Demanded my words be deleted from the tape, etc. This proposal was overwhelmingly defeated. I thought about that reading the latest opinion poll from Israel.
