It’s time for the Australian Prime Minister to call it a genocide, to stop saying Israel has a right to defend itself when it is an Occupying Power and to ensure Australia complies with its legal obligations under international law.

In his book The 100 Year War on Palestine, Rachid Khalidi describes the Dahiya doctrine - the large scale destruction of civilian infrastructure and civilian life that Israel has long implemented against Palestinians. It has executed this by use of weaponry deemed by international law to be used only in open battlefield situations he says. It has used it in Gaza, the most densely populated piece of land on earth. In order not to be held accountable Khalidi says, including for the sale of weapons for this illegal use, Israel and its supplying states and their media, have employed the mantra of ‘Israel has a right to defend itself’ in an attempt to provide legal cover of sorts. They have continued to do so through this genocide, even after Israeli leaders made clear their intention to ethnically cleanse Gaza - either by starvation or ‘voluntary’ departure.
