Alexei Naumov on Israel’s War on Gaza and the Hypocrisy of the ‘Rules-Based Order’
The situation with Israel has done more to erode international law and the very understanding of acceptable boundaries than anything else.
With Russia, everything is clear—Russia has always been the “other” for the West, and every action of this “other” can be dismissed as wrong, its position ignored, and all its security concerns labeled as imperialist delusions. “They act this way. We are not them, and that’s what sets us apart”—that’s the logic at play.
But Israel has always been one of their own for the West. It is portrayed as kin—mentally, culturally, and politically—a Western civilizational outpost surrounded by hostile Muslim nations.
And now we see how the actions of Netanyahu’s government are wholesale accepted and justified:
Yes, you can bomb peaceful neighborhoods into dust for military objectives.
Yes, you can carry out mass displacement and ethnic cleansing of an entire people.
Yes, you can block humanitarian aid to a starving city.
Yes, yes, yes.
Even by the most conservative estimates, around 800 children have died since the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine (UN data). In Gaza—17,000 (UNICEF data). For every child killed in Eastern Europe, there are 24 child deaths in Gaza.
Yet Netanyahu remains in good standing—a respected partner, a great friend of the U.S. and European states. Only now are some prominent Holocaust scholars beginning to call what’s happening in Gaza a genocide—so far only privately, without institutional condemnation. The latest notable example: Dr. Omer Bartov in The New York Times.
What’s my point? It’s clear that when a state and its people believe they face an existential threat, they will stop at nothing, no matter the cost. But if anyone still has the audacity, after all this, to speak of a “rules-based order”—the utter worthlessness of such a person’s opinion will be glaringly obvious.https://x.com/apocalypseos/status/1946135350537232815
