Adam Tooze contrasts China's steady rise with the US's chaotic decline
Prominent academic Adam Tooze writes in the Financial Times that "the contrast between the turmoil in Donald Trump's America and the mood of calm progress exuded by Beijing is striking both in style and substance", adding that "US politics is in a state of delirium".
While China clearly faces significant economic challenges, "if China's annual growth rate stabilises at around 5 percent, it will have to be counted as the most successful soft landing in the history of economic policy". Meanwhile, the Trump administration's utterly incoherent "big, beautiful bill" and the wild oscillations of its tariff policy herald only more chaos and decline.
China has emerged as the world's only renewable energy superpower, while the US is stepping back from any serious action on climate change.
China is pushing for UN-level AI governance, while the US is gutting any all regulation related to AI.
China is promoting peace and stability, while the US ramps up tensions and foments conflict around the world.
Neoliberalism and imperialism are in a state of terminal decline. Meanwhile, China's socialist system continues to build a better life for Chinese people, and China's win-win model of international relations is providing a framework for global progress, cooperation and development.
