This was a desperate gambit by Netanyahu to sabotage US diplomacy and bait Trump into thinking war with Iran would be quick and easy and help get him a deal. It won’t be. It hasn’t been. And it risks becoming his Vietnam.

Beth Sanner, former Deputy Director of National Intelligence, nails it. This was a desperate gambit by Netanyahu to sabotage US diplomacy and bait Trump into thinking war with Iran would be quick and easy and help get him a deal. It won’t be. It hasn’t been. And it risks becoming his Vietnam. The real question now: will Trump take meaningful steps to restrain Israel? Sanner's comment: “The timing of this operation, the fact that they had been planning it for years, and the fact that Netanyahu likely saw the window of opportunity closing with the U.S. potentially reaching a deal—made him feel he had to pull the trigger or abandon the operation altogether. So when he talks about a preemptive strike, I really think he was just as much preempting Iranian actions as he was preempting our negotiated solution.”
