The traditional distinction between civilians and combatants is eroding to nil and it’s not really clear where wars begin and end.
During the initial wave of Israeli attacks on Iran, Iran’s military chief of staff Major Gen. Mohammad Bagheri was among those killed. Today it was noted that in the same attack not just Bagheri but his wife and daughter were killed as well. This strongly indicates what many suspected that he was targeted and killed at his home as opposed to at a military facility.
This is a new style of warfare that could not be further from the traditional idea of combatants engaging one another on a battlefield. Hostile militaries did not traditionally have the means to track their adversaries to their personal residences in their own country and kill them alongside their wives and children in bed. This is another example of the new style of subversive and personalized warfare that is also being pioneered in Russia and Ukraine.
The traditional distinction between civilians and combatants is eroding to nil and it’s not really clear where wars begin and end. In addition to the threat of cheap and lethal FPV drones this is another thing American military officials are probably thinking about vis a vis their next expected conflict with a peer rival like China.
