I wouldn’t bet on a major rupture in the short-term, but for the record Israel simply cannot replace the U.S. as a security partner despite what Netanyahu may say. It’s not just a matter of buying arms that could be sold from elsewhere — the U.S. literally just gives billions of dollars of advanced weapons to Israel for free, both annually and upon demand. In addition to giving Israel a qualitative military advantage over its neighbors, this arrangement is vital to the economy of a small country that is in an endemic state of conflict. The last two years of war alone would have been economically ruinous if all the advanced arms and munitions Israel used had to be procured at market rate like everyone else does instead of simply given. Even if they enjoy good ties with Tel Aviv like Russia or India do no other state could or would ever replace the free provider role that the U.S. has with Israel. The U.S. also acts as diplomatic protector of Israel in all international fora and provides it with many other types of extraordinary intelligence and political assistance for which it demands no reciprocal compensation. They do this even if the policy means making countless enemies on Israel’s behalf for decades which they also then have to fight. In the past, Israel had more farsighted leaders who realized this kind of unique and wildly advantageous foreign arrangement would obviously have a time limit, so it would be best to tread conservatively by not pushing it too far, while also prioritizing signing final status political agreements with their neighbors so the needs would become less. Netanyahu instead has been incredibly entitled and interventionist in American politics and placed his own needs about U.S. interests. This has accelerated the rate at which both the right and left have gotten tired of this sweetheart deal. He has also taken the same imperious approach to neighboring countries which may have alienated them for generations, and is even leading mortal enemies to start cooperating with each other. Israel still has some cards to play and can probably get a bit more juice out of this lemon. But the Netanyahu style of leadership has come at the cost of burning bridges with most of Israel’s neighbors while helping ruin its one most critical relationship.
