“Not at All”: WFP Director Rejects Claims Hamas Is Stealing Gaza Aid
Cindy McCain, director of the World Food Programme, told Face the Nation that Hamas is not stealing the aid entering Gaza. She said incidents of looting are driven by the desperation of starving civilians.
The interview marked the first time in nearly 12 weeks that a major U.S. Sunday show directly addressed the U.S.-Israeli starvation siege on over 2 million Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
McCain warned that more than 500,000 people face famine, calling it “a man-made catastrophe.” While Israel has recently allowed limited aid trucks in, she said it’s “a drop in the bucket” compared to the 600 trucks entering daily during the ceasefire. Inconsistent access continues to block relief, especially in the north.
McCain also addressed Israel’s plan to route U.S. food aid through “safe zones” controlled by the Israeli military and private American contractors. She said WFP has not been included in that plan and urged greater international pressure to ensure aid reaches Gaza at the necessary scale through established channels. She said she recently met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to explain WFP’s operations and capabilities.
