the withdrawal from the ICC altogether AS IT AMOUNTS TO AN IMPORTANT STEP TO UNDERMINE INTERNATIONAL LAW and create a world in which laws and norms cannot be used to constrain Israel's actions

Hungary's withdrawal from the ICC doesn't take effect for another 12 months, so it clearly violates its obligations by not arresting Netanyahu during his visit to Budapest. It is important to understand the larger picture here, though: From Israel's standpoint, this is a double win. Not just seeing Hungary violate the ICC ruling and Europe not doing anything about that, but also the withdrawal from the ICC altogether AS IT AMOUNTS TO AN IMPORTANT STEP TO UNDERMINE INTERNATIONAL LAW and create a world in which laws and norms cannot be used to constrain Israel's actions as it ethnically cleanses Palestine, forcibly annexes territory and indiscriminately kills children. In a world where laws and norms do not exist, Israel's conduct will be "unproblematic." As such, Israel's vision for the world is diametrically opposed to the vision of the EU, which sought to create a world that would prevent the horrors of WWII, respect human rights and follow a law-based order. Europe's caving to Israel's campaign here is as a result not just about Hungary, Israel, or Palestine, but whether Europe any longer actually has a foundational vision that binds the continent together and offers a path towards a peaceful world. In short, will Europe stand up for the very idea of Europe, or cave to Israel's preference for lawlessness and the rule of the powerful? (Replace "Israel" here with "Putin," and the answer will be obvious...) bbc.com/news/articles/
