THE ISLAMIC LABEL: WASHINGTON’S SOFT POWER WHIP IN THE HANDS OF AL SAUD I can guarantee you that the Americans are telling MBS to slow down on music, festivals, and concerts. They don’t want Saudi Arabia to lose its “Islamic” label at least not right now. That label is needed for many reasons its “imams” are followed worldwide, and that serves U.S. interests, as they operate in line with those interests (and not just the Madkhalis) as seen in numerous conflicts and regional shifts: 1- Saudi imams call for jihad when it serves U.S. interests (like the Afghan jihad against the USSR, Chechnya against Russian). 2- They speak against it when it goes against U.S. interests (like in Gaza and US occupied Afghanistan). 3- They applaud any Arab regime that aligns with the U.S. agenda ( like warlordHafter, sisi, Abdullah of Jordan…) 4- And they label an Arab leader as deviant if he doesn’t serve American interests (like Sadam Hussein & Morsi). And when the Saudis normalise publicly, the US want the regimes of countries like Indonesia, Pakistan, and others to use Saudi Arabia as justification to sell public normalization to their people as Saudi Arabia is a representative of “Sunni” Islam. However, if MBS continues with his policy of festivals and nightclubs, it could strip the “Islamic” label from the Al Saud “state” and expose the Saudi imams, who remain silent on the “Islamic” ruling of Turki Al-Sheikh actions - the great-grandson of their grand imam and head of the entertainment authority appointed by MBS. As a result, out of embarrassment the Saudi imams followers have resorted to circulating old fatwas from before MBS’s reforms, presenting them as if they were recent. What MBS is doing may ultimately cause the American establishment to lose the Islamic soft power whip it wields through the Al Saud regime.
