Most striking was what he had to say about the genocide in Palestine, occurring now under his watch: Nothing. Not a single word. A silence he has held for 549 days. The SG should know that silence by persons with a responsibility to speak is itself a form of genocide denial.

Secretary-General Guterres delivered a speech at the UN yesterday to commemorate the Rwanda genocide, lamenting the failure of the international community to act then, and “genocide denial” now. Most striking was what he had to say about the genocide in Palestine, occurring now under his watch: Nothing. Not a single word. A silence he has held for 549 days. The SG should know that silence by persons with a responsibility to speak is itself a form of genocide denial.

The 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda was not a spontaneous frenzy of horrendous violence. It was intentional. It was premeditated. It was planned. This terrible period of Rwanda’s history reminds us that no society is immune from hate and horror.
