"After World War II, my father decided that he wanted to return to Germany, and he started to correspond with friends from his past. My parents started to plan their return to Germany. They were never Zionists and they wanted to go home. A month after the last letter my father wrote to a friend about how much he wanted to go back – he was killed." (haaretz.com/israel-news/20)
Segev forgot to mention that, between 1945-1948, the Jewish Agency in Palestine worked to prevent Jews like Segev's parents from returning home.
Instead, the Zionist leadership worked against the interests of Jews in Palestine, collaborating with foreign consular offices, to prevent Jews from going home after the war, a policy Israel continued to pursue into the 1950s. Full article: palestinenexus.com/articles/zioni
