America is a performance. It doesn't have an essence. There is no 'core' America; it is hollow through and through. It is pure performance. Because it has no essence and no identity of its own, it can only define itself by things it hates. So it must hate all the time: native people, black people, it Spanish-speaking neighbours, communists, Japanese, Arabs, Muslims (One reason why the US went completely crazy after the fall of the Soviet Union: it lost the anchoring and grounding sensation of hating a mighty force like the USSR and communism- the calming effect of representing an existential opposition to a large, organized political ideology. It had to find something else to hate fast, urgently, and 'Muslims' were it.) There is no America.
