British actress Tilda Swinton spoke at the Berlin Film Festival, condemning “state-perpetrated and internationally enabled mass murder.” “The inhumane is being perpetrated on our watch,” she said, expressing solidarity with those who “recognize the unacceptable complacency of our greed-addicted governments who make nice with planet-wreckers & war-criminals.”
Swinton defended her decision to attend the festival amid calls for boycotts over the genocide in Gaza, arguing that her presence could be more beneficial than her absence, given the platform the festival provides.
Her address came amid a sustained German campaign against Palestinian-focused events and pro-Palestine, anti-genocide voices. On February 10, 2025, Free University Berlin canceled an event featuring Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian Territories, and Eyal Weizman, the British-Israeli architect and Director of Forensic Architecture at Goldsmiths, University of London.
