‘Sydney Writers’ Festival boss Kathy Shand has quit as the Gaza War continues to tear apart the Australian arts community.
The Jewish businesswoman, a festival board member since 2014, quit as chair over concerns that some speakers at the annual event may present anti-Semitic views (SMH).
In a resignation statement, Shand wrote that “freedom of expression cannot and should not be used as a justification to accept language and conversations that compromise the festival as a safe and inclusive space for all audiences’.
Like the MSO administration, using of the word ‘safety’ to describe discomfort.
Astonishing to contemplate a festival about books and ideas, always intended to tackle controversial subjects, would pander to one group’s desire for censorship that amounts to disappearing a genocide, compounding the disappearing of its victims.
Good riddance. There is no room and no legitimacy for this oppression.
