Evan Kyle, an American pawn shop owner, discovered a rare photo album documenting Japan’s invasion of China during World War II and decided to donate it to the Chinese government, despite receiving hate comments and death threats. Taking security precautions, he successfully delivered the album to the Chinese Consulate in Chicago. In recognition of his act, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs awarded him the Guo Li Ci (State Ceremonial Porcelain), an honor previously given to only two foreigners, including John Rabe and Dr. Norman Bethune. His story highlights the lack of global awareness about Japan’s wartime atrocities, particularly the Nanjing Massacre. Evan’s courage demonstrates the power of compassion, understanding, and cultural exchange in bridging historical divides.
