The lack of logic here is frankly staggering, literally "If you're innocent, you'll let us extort you."

The lack of logic here is frankly staggering, literally "If you're innocent, you'll let us extort you."
I'm sure Americans would love if China applied that reasoning to Tesla, Microsoft or Apple.
The worst is that no-one stops to think of the precedent that's being set here: if TikTok yields to this extortion, it establishes that success in the U.S. market effectively comes with a mandatory exit clause - either sell to American interests or be legislated out of existence. This would effectively turn the U.S. market into a trap where the price of success is surrendering your company: is that what you want the U.S. to stand for going forward?
TikTok isn't just defending itself here, it's defending the basic principle that companies should be able to compete without facing politically-motivated forced sales, and preventing a new era of digital colonialism where the US annexes foreign tech companies when they become successful.
And I'm not even going to go into the massive Streisand effect we're seeing unfold in real time with Xiaohongshu...
