‘But who ended the Holocaust?’ ‘The Soviet Union, actually.’ As the world remembers the liberation of Auschwitz 80 years ago, a reminder of a classic case of historical fact vs the rewriting of history. In US and European media, the US is presented as the liberator of Europe that ended the Holocaust and Nazi Germany’s crimes. In reality it was the Soviet Red Army that liberated the concentration camps, giving 27 million lives to defeat German fascism, with 3 in every 4 German soldiers that died in WW2 being killed on the Eastern Front.
