🧵Part 1 🧵"A crooked lawyer who interprets a Bible can steal more than a thousand men with guns." Oxford University Press in 1908 printed a false and intentionally misleading bible called the Scofield Reference Bible with a mission of injecting reinterpretation that made the future state of Israel the way to God. The author of this Biblical reinterpretation was Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, a corrupt lawyer and politician turned minister with a self-proclaimed Doctor of Divinity degree. Scofield was born August 19, 1843, in Clinton Township, Michigan. Even though Scofield's mother had had multiple successful deliveries, Scofield's birth caused his mother to expire due to postpartum complications. In 1866, he married into a prominent French Catholic family in St. Louis. His brother-in-law was a prominent lawyer who apprenticed Scofield in his law office and helped him become a lawyer. He made many new connections which helped him move into the political realm. In 1871, Scofield was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives. In 1873 he worked for the election of John J. Ingalls as senator from Kansas, and when Ingalls won, the new senator had Scofield appointed U. S. District Attorney for Kansas. However, that same year Scofield was forced to resign as he had accepted bribes from railroads and for stealing political contributions intended for Ingalls. He was also found to be involved in fraudulent activities related to forging signatures. As per multiple accounts, Scofield was jailed on forgery charges, however, that appears to have been scrubbed from public records. When Scofield was not forging signatures he was busy drinking like a fish. During this time he abandoned his wife and two daughters. He was divorced by his wife on the grounds of desertion. Scofield remarried the same year after his divorce. Scofield had multiple Jewish retainers who made him a member of the prestigious Lotos Club where he rubbed shoulders with prominent dignitaries. Later, Scofield not only diverted into theology but soon became a prominent leader in the dispensational premillennialism movement. His ideologies were heavily influenced by John Nelson Darby, another lawyer who was popularly considered a heretic during his time. His writing work culminated in the "Scofield Reference Bible" which was fast-tracked. His work was considered so important that Oxford Press opened a branch in the USA to expedite the printing of his book. Due to a huge mysterious financial backing, Scofield's Reference Bible quickly became the most influential statement of dispensational premillennialism. There was no Israel in existence at that time. The regular people did not even know about a plan for Israel, and hence did not suspect any foul play. This work caused him to become significantly wealthy and he bought real estate in Dallas, Ashuelot, New Hampshire, and Douglaston, Long Island. He later founded multiple Bible schools nationwide wide which helped propagate his biblical interpretation. It was largely through the influence of Scofield's notes that dispensational premillennialism became influential among fundamentalist Christians in the United States, and these notes became a significant source for popular religious writers.
