US Ambassador to Israel: We Support Israel’s Fight Against ‘Bad Guys’ in Gaza
Israel's bombardment in Gaza killed 48 Palestinians, including 17 children
by Dave DeCamp
On Wednesday, US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides said Washington supports Israel’s fight against “bad guys” in Gaza after a three-day Israeli bombing campaign on the besieged enclave killed 48 Palestinians, including 17 children.
Israel launched the first airstrike last Friday, which targeted a leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). The strike killed the PIJ leader, a five-year-old girl, and several other Palestinians.
“These are bad guys,” Nides said, referring to PIJ and other groups in Gaza. “We’re aware of the situation going on in Gaza. We understood this was an important mission for the Israelis.”
Israel claimed that the bombing campaign was launched to prevent attacks from PIJ, but the group had not made any public threats prior to the initial airstrike. PIJ launched rockets into Israel in response to the airstrikes, but no Israelis were killed.
Israel claims misfired PIJ rockets were responsible for some of the deaths in Gaza, but the Palestinian Health Ministry denies this and says they were all killed by Israeli airstrikes. According to Middle East Eye, Israel hasn’t presented “independently-verified evidence” to back up its assertion.
Nides said that the US was “fully supportive” of Israel’s actions in Gaza. After a ceasefire was announced on Sunday, President Biden released a statement that said he was “proud” of US support for Israel and that Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system had “saved countless lives.”
On Thursday, a 10-year-old Palestinian girl succumbed to wounds she sustained during Israel’s bombardment, raising the death toll to 48.
