Iran Says US ‘Procrastinating’ Over Reviving Nuclear Deal

The EU hopes for a response from the US this week and says Iran's response was 'reasonable'

Iran on Monday accused the US of “procrastinating” as Washington is still reviewing Tehran’s response to an EU proposal to revive the nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA.

“The Americans are procrastinating and there is inaction from the European sides,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said.

Iran submitted its response to the EU proposal last week, which reportedly includes guarantees that would discourage the US from leaving the JCPOA again. EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrel said Monday that the Iranian response was “reasonable” and that he hopes the US will respond this week.

Borrell said that he hopes the US response to what Iran has put forward “allows us to end the negotiations,” signaling that he wants Washington to agree to Tehran’s offer.

State Department spokesman Ned Price said Monday that the deal is “closer” than it has been but that gaps remain. He said the US was “encouraged” by the fact that Tehran dropped the demand to have the designation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) lifted, which was a major concession for Iran.

“That’s part of the reason why a deal is closer now than it was two weeks ago. But the outcome of these ongoing discussions still remains uncertain as gaps do remain,” Price said.

Price also disputed the idea that the US was delaying the revival of the nuclear deal, but he wouldn’t specify when the US might respond.
