Iran: EU Nuclear Deal Proposal Is Not Finalized
EU wants Iran to make decisions
by Jason Ditz
Iranian officials are disputing EU assessments of the nuclear deal text, saying it is not “finalized,” and that negotiators took the text back to Tehran for consultations.
The EU reported the text as final and not subject to further negotiations, waiting for the US and Iran to make what they said they expected to be quick decisions.
The terms of the deal have not been made public, but reportedly it answered some key compromises, presumptively related to EU meetings with both parties ahead of the latest round of talks.
EU officials are now saying they want Iran to seek political answers and decide where they want to go on the deal. Previously Iran seemed set with the deal, and it’s not clear what hasn’t been addressed at this point.
Perhaps most significantly, the EU says that the “final” deal as they presented it is one that the US will support, and that it is simply up to Iran. The US hasn’t formally endorsed this deal, but appeared to speak favorably in recent days.
