Drone Hits US Base in Syria; No Casualties or Damage
No group claims credit for Tanf attack
by Jason Ditz
According to a military statement, the US base at al-Tanf, in Syria along the Iraq and Jordan border, was targeted by a series of drones today. No damage was caused and there were no casualties.
US troops have been occupying al-Tanf for years, chiefly with an eye toward supporting a series of rebel groups that have been in and out of Jordan and are trying to control the border area.
There was no claim of credit for the attack, while US statements said the strike put civilians and risk and undermines the war against ISIS, though ISIS is not broadly active in this specific area.
It is common for the US to blame drone activity on Iran, which generally means any Shi’ite group in Syria or not. That almost none of these militias are actually from Iran does little to impact the casting of blame on them.
