Iran Won’t Be Rushed on Nuclear Deal
MPs seek US guarantees as part of deal
by Jason Ditz
With a lot of progress already made on negotiations, Iranian officials warn that they will not be “rushed” into deciding to finalize the nuclear deal just because everyone else keeps saying the time is running out.
There have been times where months went by without any progress, and the US in particular emphasizes that there’s not much time left. Iran has warned that the deadlines are artificial, and wants the deal successfully finished, not raced through.
The big thing for Iran is that they want guarantees that the sanctions relief promised by the nuclear deal will actually be delivered this time, and that the US won’t just bail on the process again the moment it seems convenient.
The US has resisted guarantees, saying they can’t promise what future US administrations will do. There is some wiggle room between a full guarantee and promising that the US will intend to honor the deal.
Iran has every reason to doubt US intentions after all that’s happened, and the US continues to scoff at requests for assurances, which only adds to those doubts.
