Iran, EU have productive conversations

by Jason Ditz

The European Union has once again stepped up to try to save the Iran nuclear talks, with foreign policy chief Josep Borrell is in Tehran meeting with Iranian officials to try to break the latest impasse in the process.

Signs are positive, with Iran’s Foreign Ministry saying productive conversations were had, and Borrell saying the expectation is for the talks to resume in just a few days.

There aren’t a lot of details, but it seems that the hope is to refocus on a return to the 2015 deal without extraneous matters being included. Iran has indicated openness to this for awhile now.

The question, as ever, is where the US stands on the matter. US officials have been very pessimistic about the talks for months, to the extent that they’re not expecting anything, and are blaming Iran. Every EU effort to restart the process is a challenge, as even with success the US can re-stall matters on a whim.
