Iran Warns US Sanctions Violate UN Resolution on Nuclear Deal

White House says sanctions will remain with or without deal\

by Jason Ditz

On Wednesday, the US announced a new round of sanctions against Iran, targeting companies for putative supporting of Iran’s conventional ballistic missile program.

Iran was critical of the new sanctions, saying they violate an existing UN resolution on the nuclear deal, and are a “sign of the US government’s malice towards the Iranian people.

The US has consistently sanctioned Iran’s conventional missile program based on a very nebulous wording of a resolution that bans nuclear-capable missiles, arguing that it forbids any and all missiles that could even be like a similar missile with different capabilities.

The White House insisted that the new sanctions won’t impact the nuclear talks, though they didn’t say why that would be. Moreover, the White House said the sanctions would remain with or without the deal.

US officials say only a small number of outstanding issues remain on the nuclear deal. Earlier this week, Iran suggested the US needs to tone down its unreasonable expectations.
