On Friday, President Biden signed a massive $1.5 trillion omnibus spending bill that includes $13.6 billion in emergency Ukraine aid.
The bill appropriates $782 billion for military spending, a boost from the $778 billion that was authorized by the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act. The military budget increased by 6% compared to last year.
On top of the $782 billion, the Pentagon will get $6.5 billion out of the Ukraine aid to pay for troop deployments in Eastern Europes and restock weapons the US has sent or is planning to send to Ukraine.
The spending bill also includes an additional $1 billion for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. The extra Iron Dome funding is on top of the $3.8 billion in military aid that Israel gets from Washington each year.
Israel requested an additional $1 billion in military aid after its May 2021 bombing campaign in Gaza, which killed at least 256 Palestinians. At the time of the request, Israeli officials said the extra $1 billion was needed to replenish the Iron Dome
