Iran’s Parliament Sets Conditions for Final Nuclear Deal
Iran raises possibility of US prisoner swap
by Jason Ditz
Iran’s parliament has set conditions for the return to the P5+1 nuclear deal, continuing to seek assurances that the US won’t unilaterally withdraw once again.
This is important because, despite US pessimism, the deal appears extremely close, to the point where it could easily be finalized in the next few days.
Iranian officials are ready for that, and say they’d also be ready for an immediate prisoner swap with the US as part of the deal-making. US officials have not indicated if they’re open for that.
US officials have suggested they want Iran to release Americans as part of the deal, which may mean the US will not be so open to release their own detainees.
It only makes sense that if the US is holding out for Americans Iran would ensure their nationals are returned too. Anything that obvious could take time to work out, however, though the hope is everything is falling into place.
