French FM: Iran Nuclear Talks Still Far From a Deal

Discussions are ongoing, but 'too slow'

by Jason Ditz

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian sounded upbeat on the Iran talks earlier this week, saying they are on a “positive path.” Tuesday, he was very pessimistic, saying the talks are far from a deal to revive the nuclear pact.

Le Drian says the talks are “too slow” and jeopardizes the chances of finding a mutually acceptable solution. Progress is coming, but slowly.

It would be ideal for everyone to make a quick, straightforward deal now that the talks have resumed. Its not clear what is holding them up, but Iran wants assurances of the US abiding by the deal this time.

US officials have said they might not be able to make such a guarantee, whereas Iran has insisted that’s one of their key issues, in as much as the US didn’t abide by the deal in 2015, and then withdrew unilaterally a few years later.
