EU Slams Israeli Plan for 1,300 New Settlements
Plan is a major obstacle to two-state solution
by Jason Ditz
On Monday, the European Union issued a statement criticizing Israel’s latest major settlement plan, which will see 1,300 new units built in the occupied West Bank.
They warned chiefly that the settlements are illegal under international law, adding it is a huge obstacle to the two-state solution and to a lasting peace in the region.
This is very much one of the points of the settlements for Israel, designed to preclude the Palestinians ever getting a state, which is why the settlements are so popular among hawkish factions within Israel.
France issued its own statement separate from the EU, calling for Israel to halt unilateral steps to undermine the two-state solution. The US State Department issued a statement saying they were “concerned” by the plans.
There is no indication that Israel is taking these warnings particularly seriously, though Israeli media have reported that the White House is also pressing Israel’s current government to restrict the construction.
