Pentagon: Colombians Arrested in Haitian President’s Killing Had US Training
At least one of the suspects had previously been an informant for the DEA
by Dave DeCamp
The Pentagon said on Thursday that some of the former Colombian servicemen arrested over the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise had previously received training from the US military.
“A review of our training databases indicates that a small number of the Colombian individuals detained as part of this investigation had participated in past US military training and education programs while serving as active members of the Colombian Military Forces,” Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Ken Hoffman said in a statement to The Washington Post.
Hoffman didn’t specify how many of the Colombians received US training. So far, at least 20 people have been arrested for killing Moise, mostly Colombian nationals, along with two Haitian Americans. Most of the Colombians are former soldiers.
The Pentagon training is not the only tie some suspects have to the US government. CNN reported on Tuesday that several of the suspects were previously informants for US law enforcement. The Drug Enforcement Administration confirmed that at least one of the suspects arrested by Haitian police previously worked as an informant for the DEA.
A Florida-based private security company is facing questions over the plot. The firm, CTU Security, used a company credit card to purchase 19 plane tickets from Bogota to Santo Domingo for some of the Colombian suspects. One of the Haitian Americans that is being detained is said to have acted as the middle man between the Colombians and CTU Security.'
