UAE-Backed Group Claims Credit for Mysterious Base on Yemen Island
UAE ships have made recent stops to Mayun Island
by Jason Ditz
Mystery surrounding recent activity at the island of Mayun (also known as Perim) seems to be solved, with militia leader Tariq Saleh reporting that his faction is operating on the island. They are aligned with the UAE, which is reportedly building an air base there.
The UAE has not commented, but ship-tracking data shows UAE ships have traveled to the island recently. Saudi officials confirmed that the anti-Houthi coalition has stationedc equipment at the base.
Spanning the strait between Yemen and Djibouti, the Mayun island is in a potentially strategic location, and the UAE has shown interest throughout the Yemen War with securing locations of such value.
The UAE has similarly given itself serious positions on the island of Socotra. Between them, the reports of the UAE seeking a long-term position as a regional military power seems to be confirmed, and they are grabbing important posts that aren’t necessarily relevant to this war.
