Biden Will Support Funding to Replenish Israel’s Iron Dome
Administration will support $1 billion proposal for Israel
by Jason Ditz
After a couple of weeks of war in the Gaza Strip, which Israeli officials hint are just the start of a new campaign, the Biden Administration is looking to commit themselves to more spending on Israeli aid to show continued commitment.
That is going to come in the form of a $1 billion proposal to replenish Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. State Department officials hinted at equal measures for the safety of the Palestinians, but that’s going to depend heavily on Israel allowing aid in.
State Department officials further added that the funding would be provided irrespective of what Israeli government is in power. At present, the Israeli parliament is facing some deal-making which could see a new government installed.
That’s all going to be dealt with later, while the Iron Dome funding is expected to be a quick passage through Congress, with the administration backing the idea. They note similar funding was offered to Israel after the 2014 war on Gaza.
Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) expressed opposition to the plan, saying the US should not rush to give the Israeli military another billion dollars, and that there are domestic spending needs that could be covered instead.
