Trump Administration Slaps More Sanctions on Iran
Sanctions were also implemented on an Iraqi militia leader

Determined to increase its “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran to the end, the Trump administration slapped new sanctions on Iran on Wednesday.
The new sanctions targeted two foundations tied to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The US Treasury Department alleges that these organizations enable a “corrupt” political system, a typical claim from the US when it’s imposing sanctions against the Iranian government.
The US also announced sanctions on an Iraqi militia leader. The Treasury Department listed Abdulaziz al-Muhammadawi as a specially designated global terrorist, over ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, a group the US considers a terrorist organization.
Al-Muhammadawi is the chief of staff of Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a group of mostly Shia Iraqi state-sponsored militias that was formed in 2014 to fight ISIS. Al-Muhammadawi replaced Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis last year, who was killed alongside Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani in a US drone strike in January 2020.
