Israel Continues to Attack Syria as Tehran Awaits Biden Administration

Latest attacks pound area near Iraqi border at Abu Kamal

Jason Ditz

The fourth series of Israeli strikes on Syrian soil in the past two weeks, warplanes hit the border region near Iraq in Deir Ezzor Province, hitting warehouses near Abu Kamal, which media claim were being used by Shi’ite militias.

Israel and the Israeli press present Shi’ite militias as Iranians, though in practice the militias in this area are almost exclusively Iraqi PMF fighters who crossed in to continue fighting against ISIS.

With Iran looking to wait out the Trump Administration, and with high hopes for a diplomacy reset with Biden, Israel is stepping up the attacks on Iran, or perceived Iranian targets, to try to stir things up at the last minute.

Israeli officials see this as slowing down Iran, or proving the nation’s weakness, but Iran seems to be just waiting out the clock on Trump, and with most of Israel’s attacks hitting groups only tangentially related to them, they can afford to wait for Biden.
