Iraqi Shi’ite Militia Leader: Ceasefire With US Is Over

Leader warns US didn't meet conditions on pullout

Jason Ditz

With tensions between the US and Iraq continuing to mount, Qais al-Khazali, the leader of Asaib Ahl al-Haq, has announced that the ceasefire among Shi’ite militias with the US is over.

It’s not a shock, because of the tensions, but it comes without a lot of specifics. Khazali suggested that the US had failed to meet the conditions of the ceasefire, which is why they’re dropping it.

The conditions, as far as were made public, were for the US to provide a timeline for withdrawing its remaining forces from Iraq. This may suggest they no longer have confidence the pullout will be completed by Trump.

With concern for a US war with Iran kicking off in the next couple of months, the US might not be moving away from the area, putting the drawdown in doubt. President-elect Joe Biden is nor seen as particularly favorable to ending the wars.'
