Demanding an ouster and supporting a coup didn’t work in Venezuela, so the Trump Administration is now trying to negotiate the ouster of Venezuela’s President Maduro in secret meetings. Former Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell held such a meeting in Mexico City.

The goal was to get Maduro to leave voluntarily, but are offering conflicting accounts on how that is going. No deal has been made so far.

This is just the latest track for the administration, with President Trump said to be increasingly frustrated at his failure to oust Maduro. Maduro’s allies are reportedly interested in seeing how the US election works out.

Grenell’s secret meeting was apparently done separately, and not coordinated with the US State Department, where Elliott Abrams is the special envoy for a policy of regime change.
