Pompeo: US Would Take Action If Iran Arms Embargo Ends
UN embargo set to expire, Russia won't agree to extend

Speaking to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo continued to call on the world to accept extending the UN arms embargo against Iran. The embargo is scheduled to expire on October 18.
Pompeo says that if the embargo is lifted, the US would take action to “ensure that the arms embargo does not expire.” Pompeo claimed the US can do this to protect American interests, but was not specific on how that would work.
The UN is plainly not going to extend the embargo, with Russia already clear on a planned veto. Russia has deals to sell Iran defensive systems, and China is also looking to make some deals, so neither wants to see the embargo last.
US officials have long claimed the power to force “snap-back” restrictions on Iran, a claim based on the idea that the US is still technically a part of a nuclear deal they already abandoned. If that power ever existed for the US before, it almost certainly doesn’t now, and the embargo will end in just a few months.
