Centcom Chief Expects Long-Term Presence in Iraq

ISIS fight to continue for years to come

Gen Frank McKenzie, while saying that at some point the US wants to get “smaller” in Iraq says that won’t happen soon, and confirmed he predicts US troops to stay for years to come, nominally to fight ISIS.

This came amid Gen. McKenzie accusing Iran of getting in the way of the fight against ISIS, which boils down to Iran being the excuse for US troops to stay in Iraq, despite ISIS largely no longer existing, and Iraq wanting US troops out.

McKenzie’s narrow allows the US to have its cake and eat it too, both saying they want to leave Iraq and not actually having to do it, with an open-ended excuse in mind.

McKenzie made similar comments on Syria just the day prior, saying that ISIS forces are likely to reconstitute themselves in Syria, where US troops are not present in great numbers.
