China ‘Must Retaliate’ After US Closes Houston Consulate
Warns move did huge damage to US-China ties
Jason Ditz
US and Chinese ties were already very strained, and Chinese officials warn they are “seriously harmed” after the US ordered them to close their Houston consulate on Wednesday. US officials accused China of spying.
This is likely to be more than just a single incident, as Chinese officials say they “must retaliate” against the US for such a move. It’s not clear what form that will take, but the US has considered consulates in China that could be targeted.
Closing a consulate is viewed as an extremely hostile move, and it would be virtually obligatory to do something on a comparable scale. The concern is that the US will retaliate over the retaliation and the relations will get worse.
Chinese media suggested that closing the Wuhan Consulate would be too minor, and one suggested Hong Kong’s Consulate might be more desirable as the US obviously uses it as an intelligence center.
