An AKSbazi.com Production Conceived and Produced by Haleh Anvari Compilation editor Kambiz Saffari 7sides of a Cylinder 7 Shorts by 7 Iranian Filmmakers A conqueror's edict or a declaration of tolerance and respect for different peoples and faiths? A reminder of what was or a symbol of what could have been? The Cyrus Cylinder is a precious icon to Iranian people around the world. But what does it mean to the rising generation? In 2013 the Cyrus Cylinder travelled to the USA for the first time as part of a cultural diplomacy effort by the Iran Heritage Foundation. This small clay object is approximately 2600 years old and has been called the first declaration of human rights by some and is the subject of great historical pride for Iranians. .But what does the Cylinder mean to young Iranians in Iran and the United States? 7sides of a Cylinder is a multi-vocal film addressing the importance of the Cyrus Cylinder through the eyes of seven young Iranian and Iranian- American filmmakers examining the cylinder's significance to the construction of Iranian identity across three continents. This experimental work comprises seven short contemplative films made along the route the cylinder took across the United States from Washington DC via Houston, New York and San Francisco to Los Angeles. It also includes a viewpoint from London, the physical home of the cylinder, and Tehran, the main location of its affective and cultural memory. The result is as much about Iranians as it is about the cylinder. Sponsored by the Iran Heritage Foundation and IHF America
