Trump Budget Calls for New Nuclear Warheads and 2 Types of Missiles

Nuclear arms are a growing priority in 2021 budget

Once again underscoring the Trump Administration’s interests in making a large nuclear weapons arsenal a central part of the US military, the latest Pentagon budget request is seeking funding for new nuclear warheads, and also two different types of nuclear-capable missiles.
Missile development is focused, on the one hand, on Intermediate Nuclear Forces-capable weapons that the US can now field since withdrawing from the INF Treaty last year.
The other appears to be a response to Russia’s recent testing of hypersonic missiles, with $3.2 billion sought for speeding up America’s version of these missiles, seemingly determined to keep up with Russia on that front.

The new warhead is the W93, a submarine-launched warhead that has been in the works for some time, and is getting additional funding in the 2021 budget. The Department of Energy has been pushing this design as very upgradable.
