North Korea’s Kim Threatens to Demonstrate New Strategic Weapon Soon

Pompeo urges Kim to take a different course

In comments Wednesday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un accused the US of violating commitments not to hold drills, and suggested that he would not be “unilaterally bound” to holding off tests of missiles going forward.

He went on to say that the world would soon “witness a new strategic weapon to be possessed by the DPRK,” though he did not indicate what that actually was. Some analysts suggest the lack of specificity might mean this isn’t a major threat.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged Kim to take “a different course,” saying the US wants him to “choose peace and prosperity over conflict and war.”

Trump dismissed the idea that Kim would do any tests, saying he is “a man of his word” and signed a “contract” not to do anything of the sort. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed “deep concern,” but it is still unclear what the test is,and if it violates anything agreed upon in the past.
