Arab Nations’ Reaction to Trump Israel Plan Is Mostly About US Ties
Many nations fear angering Trump

While historically any question of Israel-Palestine was driven heavily in a lot of Arab nations by the fate of the Palestinians, President Trump’s Tuesday unveiling of his “deal of the century” suggests that US reaction may now be the driving force.
A lot of Arab states, particularly Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf Arab states, are being very hesitant with their reactions, and are avoiding committing more heavily. Analyst Neil Quilliam said that those nations “are dependent upon the US and will not risk angering Trump, given his propensity to act like a petulant child.”
At the same time, there isn’t uniform acquiescence. Both Iraq and Syria seem to be opposed to the plan, fearing its regional impact and that it would empower the already militarily hostile Israel. Lebanon would almost certainly stake out a similar position by that same reasoning.
Concern about what is going to happen to the Palestinians, however, is still an issue domestically in those countries, and any that is too eager to endorse the plan the Palestinians have already rejected risks some political repercussions, even if it spares them from Trump being angry.
