Huge US Military Convoy Arrives at Western Iraq Base
Over 100 trucks carrying weapons, other vehicles arrive
Jason Ditz
Western Iraq hasn’t exactly been a hotbed of activity lately, but a convoy of over 100 US military trucks poured across the border on Friday from neighboring Jordan, carrying large amounts of arms and vehicles to Ayn al-Asad base,
What they’re going to do with all these weapons is anyone’s guess, and US officials have largely not commented on the matter at all. Clearly they are either preparing to do something, or preparing for something they expect to happen.
The only clue of anything happening anywhere near this area is reports from earlier in the week accusing Iran of setting up a “major” base at al-Bukamal, the main border crossing in Syria.
This is all based on satellite images and conjecture, and it’s not clear this “base” is either Iranian or particularly major. Still, the US base that’s getting all these weapons is on the main highway leading to that border crossing. That’s not to say that the two reports are connected, but they’re the only stories out of this area.
