Joint Saudi-UAE Delegation in South Yemen to Discuss Separatists
Yemen govt demands separatists pull out of Aden
Jason Ditz
With the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) in control of the capital of Aden, a delegation of Saudi and UAE members has been dispatched into the area to try to resolve the dispute between STC and government forces.
The STC took over Aden last weekend, and is calling for the re-creation of South Yemen as a separate country. The Yemen government, which the Saudis back, are demanding the STC unconditionally surrender the city in return for talks.
The STC, which is among the factions the UAE support, have rejected this suggestion, and also warned the government to get rid of its ties to the northerners and the Muslim Brotherhood..
While the joint delegation is discussing what to do, the Saudi side is still suggesting it’s going to lead to the separatists surrendering Aden. The STC has said they won’t, however, and the UAE probably isn’t going to try to force them without getting something major in return.
