There’s a lot of concern around the Strait of Hormuz right now after a British tanker was seized by Iran, a reciprocal move for Britain seizing an Iranian tanker near Gibraltar. Iran, however, is trying to calm the situation.
On Tuesday, Iranian officials were quick to promise that they will ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz, and that they won’t allow any disturbance to the shipment of oil out of the Persian Gulf.
The assurance was offered to French FM Jean-Yves Le Drian, and came with Iran also urging an effort to return to diplomacy. Iran and France have been trying to settle on a new round of nuclear program and sanctions relief talks for awhile.
Iranian Deputy FM Abbas Araqchi conveyed the message, and later met with President Macron during his visit to Paris. Iranian officials said the two both agreed on the importance of getting back to diplomacy.
