Pompeo to Meet Kim Jong Un in North Korea on Sunday

Visit will include nuclear talks, planning for Trump-Kim summit

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s long-anticipated latest visit to North Korea has been scheduled for this weekend, according to officials familiar with the situation. He is to meet with Kim Jong Un on Sunday in Pyongyang.

This is the latest in a series of Pompeo-Kim meetings, the first of which happened on April 1, but the first in a couple of months, as his last planned visit was cancelled by the administration at the last minute.

The two will discuss the ongoing denuclearization process, which has been slowing down, with North Korea wanting to make some progress toward a peace treaty as the denuclearization continues.

This has led to a slowdown, as US officials have resisted any move toward peace until the denuclearization is complete, and Kim says hes not going to just keep going without some assurances.

The other major focus of Pompeo’s visit is a planned second Trump-Kim summit, which both sides have reported agreeing to, but about which no details have been announced. Pompeo is likely to hammer some of the details out during the visit.
