Snr Russian senator warns US politicians about dangers of exceptionalism doctrine
The head of the Russian Upper House Committee for International Relations has warned American politicians against using exceptionalism as national ideology, adding that there are enough historical examples proving his point.
“The problem of the current generation of American ‘hawks’ is that they attempt to change the world so that it fits their need and for this they apply methods that would work on themselves. To be more precise, they would demonstrate exactly the type of behavior that they demand from Russia if only they were weaker and somehow more dependent,” Senator Konstantin Kosachev wrote on his Facebook page on Monday. “Constantly staying in the position of power distorts many politicians’ perceptions and plays a bad joke with them,” he added.
“Apparently, these politicians have truly found faith in the exceptionalism of the American nation, just as many of their predecessors did with their own nations in the first half of the 20th century and before that. We all know what happened to them, know how such things inevitably end.” Kosachev added in his comment.
The Facebook post came as a reply to the recent statements of the US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the key sponsors of the latest bill on anti-Russian sanctions. The US politicians and his allies announced that they were seeking to punish Russia for a number of alleged wrongdoings, like the reunification with Crimea approved by Crimeans at a universal referendum or plain unproven crimes, like the recent poisoning of four people in the UK and promised not to use the sanctions if the Russian authorities admit their guilt in these and other similar incidents.
Senator Kosachev noted that Russia has a different understanding of the world order and in it every nation has equal right for power and independence that they use to protect own interests.
“The power is in the truth. Russia most definitely will not slander itself only to win love from Mr Graham and his adherents. Not going to happen.” The Russian senator wrote.
Earlier, the Russian senator likened the newest US plan of anti-Russian restrictions to actions of a police force that uses torture and threats to extract a false confession from suspects.
Last week, the press secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters that the Kremlin considered the new sanctions plan as well as its association with the UK poisonings as categorically unacceptable and contradicting the international law.
