The Guggenheim's Dazzling Burn: Sorry Mr. President, All Outta Van Goghs But How About This Golden Toilet?
by
What they wanted prolly 'cause someone suggested they get artsy
Behold the glorious panache of the response by the Guggenheim's chief curator after the Trumps made the tacky request to “borrow” a Vincent Van Gogh painting from their collection for use in their living quarters. Ever so politely, curator Nancy Spector replied she could not grant the favor but was able to offer an “alternative”: An 18-karat, fully functioning, solid gold toilet, an interactive work by artist Maurizio Cattelan entitled "America" meant as a brazen satire of this country's grotesque wealth - coincidentally and most repulsively personified by...you know.
The story was first reported by The Washington Post, though everyone reading it assumed it was from The Onion because God bless leaks and how great is this?
Spector added the artist “would like to offer it to the White House for a long-term loan.”
Asked about his offer, Cattelan told the Post, “What’s the point of our life? Everything seems absurd until we die and then it makes sense.” Twitter ate it up. "Nothing says Trump's America like a solid gold toilet," noted one gleeful soul, and from another, "In the year of our Lord two thousand and eighteen, even the Guggenheim dunks on the President." One of our faves: "White House: 'Gimme art by the ear guy.' Guggenheim: 'Literally you are a piece of shit have a nice day fund the arts in school bish!'" Well-played, artists all.
What they were offered 'cause it's what they deserve
What they've done to the once-upon-a-time dignity of the office
